Theo MENDEZ (1934 - 1997)
Theo Mendez (1934 – 1997) An Inspiration
Theo Mendez’s work has stood the test of time. It is vibrant, dynamic and unique. He exhibited very rarely in his lifetime and we are pleased to be able to show his work which undoubtedly deserves both recognition and appreciation.
Theo Mendez taught at Camberwell School of Art from 1958 – 1984. He was appointed Head of the vigorous Textile and Design department in 1976, where his inspirational methods and teaching helped launch many successful careers into the UK fashion world.
Theo initially studied textiles, turning to painting at Camberwell School ofArt whilst studying under the likes of Martin Bloch and Michael Rothenstein. After briefly working in industry,Theo decided to return to complete his textile degree and finally spent a year at London University’s Institute of Education in 1957.
Theo’s work flourished at Camberwell, where he won several awards with fabrics designed by him being sold through Heal’s. His reputation for teaching textile design through painting, travel and architecture was well known and he was particularly remembered for his ability to open minds, excite and inspire.
On his early retirement from Camberwell, following theTextile Department’s merger with Central St Martins, he was able to concentrate solely on his passion for painting; developing the marriage between colour, shape and design; using his painting and collages as a platform for the recollection of memorable images, occasions and lasting influences. The humour, excitement and sheer love of his experiences are captured in a painting, collage or construction. T
Theo’s other passion was for music and he shared Picasso’s belief in the value of solitude accompanied by music....once saying .." sometimes the work comes directly from music, to which I listen several hours every day - like food and drink it is essential. I I achieve anything at all, it has, for me, to stand lasting comtemplation.."
We have carefully chosen a selection of Theo’s work, primarily focussing on his collages which epitomise the importance of experience, delight in recording the simple and are significant in the conceptual context of pattern and design. We also be some exquisite examples of Theo’s early painting.
