Sir Stanley SPENCER CBE, RA 1891 - 1959
to Sir Stanley SPENCER RA ( 1891 - 1959 )
“ Sketchbook drawings, and work by Family and friends ” to July 2nd 2005
A wonderful, large exhibition of sketchbook drawings, mostly from the Estate of one of England's most creative, visionary and extrovert artists in the first half of the twentieth century, originating in the main from the 1998 Stanley Spencer Studio Sale at Christie's.
Never before seen in this way, they not only provide an insight into the mind of a genius, but also illustrate details of his working methods.
The seven sketches for "Christ preaching at Cookham Regatta" the great unfinished canvas (Acquired by The Viscount Astor) upon which he was working until just beforehe died, are absolutely remarkable.
He married Hilda CARLINE at Wangford, Suffolk in 1925, but in 1937, she divorced him, and he then married Patricia PREECE. This marriage was never consummated and she left him whilst on honeymoon, to spend the rest of her life with her 'partner', the painter Dorothy HEPWORTH.
Among the works by Family and friends is 'CSSM'- the Childrens Special Service Mission,by Hilda's mother Anne CARLINE. One of our patrons, who has a house in Suffolk, has identified this as the Beach in Southwold where the same Christian Outing still takes place every year.
In any case please try to see the show, as you will find it both illuminating and hugely enjoyable.
