Richard ROBBINS Hon. RBA (1928 - 2009)
RICHARD ROBBINS
Professor, Fine Art Middlesex University, Hon. RBA
Richards’ unique style and treatment of his paintings was harmonious and balanced, a mixture between vibrant expression and figurative beauty. He showed respect for every aspect of his subject matter whether it be the bathers on the beach in Lyme Regis - their stance and gestures, the extraordinary movements and frenetic activity of the beautiful seagulls, the strength and intimidation of the cruel sea or the natural integrity of a blossom.
Richard presented us with formidable and mesmerising studies of growth, flowers and shrubs, exploring the rythmn and colour he saw in Nature.
His work is in oil, charcoal and pastels, building up the paint and creating his characteristic textures and extraordinary colours.
We have also been fortunate to have in the gallery some of his wonderful sculpture studies, of the Dance Hall and The Steam Room. His studies from life in Bronze and painted Aluminium which epitomised his amazing ability to capture a thought and a feeling.
Richard taught at Hornsey School of Art, Middlesex University from 1960 – 1993, he retired as Head of Fine Art and Honorary Professor Fine Art; and as an Honorary Member, of the Royal Society of British Artists.
