PHIL TYLER
"Although a contemporary of YBA and a full-time lecturer in contemporary fine art in Brighton, my work has its roots in the much earlier tradition of the NEAC with Sickert and Singer Sargent at the helm.
I'm still fascinated by the way that paint can be both material (Guston called it coloured dirt!) and at the same time it can be used to mimic the effects of light, I like that duality in my own work and aspire to a fusion between description and gesture, a marriage perhaps, of the fomalism and specifics of Uglow and the 'spirit of the mass' of Auerback and Bomberg.
I've never been that interested in style. For me the subject matter is all important and it is that which dictates how something should be painted. Whether it is a grieving figure, the tense drama of an intimate still life or complex groups of figures - each has to be considered in terms of its own integrity and facture..." Phil Tyler 2006
