Noel BETOWSKI
Born Tilbury, Essex in 1952, Noel took a Foundation Course in Art & Design at Thurrock followed by three years at The Central School of Art, obtaining a BA Fine Art, Painting, in 1976.
While teaching part-time at The City Literary Institute 1977-87, he began visiting Cornwall, and painted a large series of detailed landscapes around St Ives, Mousehole & St Just.
In 1987 he moved with his wife Pam and son, first to Gulval, Penzance; then Sancreed where they built a Zen garden; finally, they moved to their present home, where Noel has his own studio.
Transferring from the urban life of North London to the pace of life in Cornwall is a big step for any young man to take, but it had an immediate, beneficial effect upon Noel's work. He, his wife Pam and their son have a passion for Celtic music and they have already published one CD. He has a rare degree of single-mindedness - evident when one looks at the way in which he has maintained his minimal “Vessels” most of which contain either buildings or tiny ships, according to the mood of their creator. (His latest 'Harbour & Ships' shaped like a gigantic fish's head - at least that is what I see (despite the building)- but I may be entirely wrong!
So the possibilities offered by The Eden Project, have influenced his current output.
The intricate, complex structure of the biomes gives this series a mysterious, futuristic, beauty, and the spatial aspects of the plant houses offer exciting visual inspiration. The entire exhibition is on the site. Noel Oddy &Laurie MacLaren 2008
