Ishbel McWHIRTER RCA
Blue across the board
“ I try to grab a moment that will disappear forever. It could be a strange light on the water, an unlikely sky and hectic birds.Or the mood around a person, the tilt of a head, the droop of an eyelid echoing the curve of a mouth. Something so simple can take my breath away and it’s enough to make me lunge into the working process. But I try very hard to preserve that first snapshot vision that so excited me.I really cannot work any other way”
Ishbel McWhirter RCA
The wonderful thing about painters is their exuberance, and their innate ability to convey their perceptions of colour and form to their audiences.
Ishbel's artistic talent was such that she had her first one person exhibition in the West End when she was just 18 years old. Oskar Kokoschka picked her work out from a selection of A S Neill's pupils, stating " I would teach that one ", and she became his pupil in London. In 1990, as a tribute to her talent and debt to OK's encouragement of her, a McWhirter
Loan Retrospective was held in Kokoschka's birthplace Pochlarn which is just outside Vienna.
OK's lifelong friend Alfred Marnau the poet, saw the root of Ishbel's talent as:-
"The child's unerring, uncorruptible eye that was hers in the beginning and is with her still".
This exhibition is further proof of her continuing magic.
