Fiona WINNING

“I make paintings and prints in response to the places I go walking. I use acrylic and emulsion paints, applying layers of colour with a variety of methods onto prepared surfaces such as paper, board, or muslin on board. I am interested in simplifying the shapes I see, and in the way light changes the landscape. I mix colours with the intention of enhancing scale and atmosphere. Much of it is intuitive, and I enjoy working with accidental combinations that result from this process. I work on several paintings at a time, which allows the ideas formed while working on one to be further developed on another.

During the summer of 2005 I developed an interest in water: specifically, water left behind in puddles, tide marks on the beach, and the shapes that occur when water evaporates. Back in the studio, I began to re-examine the physical properties of paint, observing the way residues of pigment are deposited when I incorporate similar processes in my paintings.” Fiona Winning 2011
