Eliza ANDREWES (d. 2009)
Eliza Andrewes trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts - originally as a graphic Designer, then practiced for some years for Balding and Mansell Printers, Heals and British Rail. Elected Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers. Taught at the Berkshire College of Art and Design and subsequently in her later years lead painting groups all over Europe.
Eliza was passionate about painting especially the Lake District, she captured the majesty of the mountains and screes of Cumbria and also her beloved Hampstead Heath with an ethereal touch. The tantalising effect of the sky and light is paramount in her paintings; skies always fascinated her as they formed an integral part of every landscape and form the palette and tone for her work. The play of light was an important aspect in her later body of work, capturing a fleeting moment as light strikes a scree face or shimmers through the branches only to focus on the immediacy and strength of the haloed form.
Painting against the sunlight, tones and hues form important parts in the building up of the painting and working in thin layers…’underlining the transparent colour… in versions of the same hue’,.. allowed Eliza to delicately create the large canvases that she presented.
We were very saddened by her sudden death in the Summer of 2009.
