Dennis GILBERT
This painter is like a beacon, radiating his sheer enjoyment from every canvas or small watercolour
- an example to us all.
"Dennis is a painter’s painter, with roots in Turner, Constable and the great French & Italian Masters.” - Leonard McComb RA 2002 and
“....his feeling for gladed backwaters, which whether in Venice or on the Thames possess a richness of colour that, to paraphrase Matisse, - lighten up a dark room.”
These comments summarise the esteem in which Dennis is held in the art world.
His preferred media are oils, watercolours and pastels; he particularly enjoys painting landscapes, flowers, portraits and nudes, ( but not necessarily in that order! ).
Whilst he especially likes the countryside in the Thames Valley he also finds all towns with beautiful parks, waterways and buildings attractive.
He lives and works in Chelsea where he has a beautiful studio built in the Arts & Crafts style, he also has many painter and musician friends with whom he is able to enjoy good music, food, wine and above all good company.
His favourite cities are London,Paris and of course, Venice; so we have illustrated his splendid Festa del Redentore, which began as a vow on behalf of the city of Venice - under Doge Alvise Mocenigo in 1576, to express their thanks for the city’s deliverance from the plague. This Festa is celebrated with an enormous firework display on the third Sunday of July every year.
We are really honoured to be able to present this specially chosen collection of Dennis's work in this memorable year and admire his unbounded energy and enjoyment of life, which is so obviously reflected in his paintings. Noel Oddy, 2007
